1,001 Kicks

by Lee

She’s yours for the summer – ride all you want,         he said,
        if you can start ‘er.

Summer, 1996, I kick the Harley a thousandth time:
        backfire,
                burst of smoke,
                        another         failure.

I reposition and repeat         failure. . . .

Sweat falls,
        inner thigh cramps.
                emasculation complete,
                        neighbors pray for the end.

Behind a picture window, my three-year-old stands on the couch
enraptured by the spectacle – jumping
                laughing,
                        screaming manically at each
        pop,
                burst of smoke,
                        and
                                        failure.
